Reading the ten Celtic Cross positions

1. Present: The heart of the matter — the current situation you face.
2. Challenge: What crosses it — the obstacle standing in the way.
3. Foundation: The root beneath the situation — its distant past and basis.
4. Recent Past: What is just passing — events moving out of the picture.
5. Crown: The goal or best possible outcome you can aim for.
6. Near Future: What is coming — the next influence to arrive.
7. Self: The querent's attitude and stance toward the situation.
8. Environment: Outside influences and other people around you.
9. Hopes & Fears: What you long for and what you dread — often two sides of one coin.
10. Outcome: The likely result if the present course continues.

How the Celtic Cross spread works

One draw lays out ten distinct cards from the full 78-card deck — the 22 Major Arcana plus the 56 Minor Arcana across Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles — dealt without replacement into the ten classic Celtic Cross positions. The first six form the central cross (Present, Challenge, Foundation, Recent Past, Crown, and Near Future) and the last four form the staff (Self, Environment, Hopes & Fears, and Outcome). Each card gets a fair Upright or Reversed orientation and shows its keyword meaning, so you can read the story the ten positions tell together.

Fair random selection

The ten cards are shuffled with a Fisher–Yates draw and taken from the top of the deck, so no card can repeat within a spread, then each card flips a fair 50/50 orientation when reversed cards are enabled. Rangdom uses the Web Crypto API for random generation, so the next spread is not predictable from previous draws.

Upright and reversed

Keep the “Include reversed cards” toggle on for the traditional 50/50 chance of a reversed card in each position, or turn it off when every card should land Upright.

When to use it
