What is the periodic table?
The periodic table arranges all 118 known chemical elements in order of increasing atomic number — the number of protons in an atom's nucleus. Reading left to right and top to bottom, each element sits one proton heavier than the last. Elements are laid out in 18 vertical groups and 7 horizontal periods so that those with similar chemical behaviour line up in the same column. Tap any cell in the chart above to see that element's atomic number, one- or two-letter symbol, full name, and category.
Atomic number, symbol, and category
Every element has a unique atomic number (hydrogen is 1, helium is 2, all the way up to oganesson at 118) and a short chemical symbol such as H, He, Fe, or Au. The colour of each cell shows its category — alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, post-transition metals, metalloids, reactive nonmetals, noble gases, lanthanides, actinides, and the newest superheavy elements whose chemistry is still uncertain. The lanthanides (57–71) and actinides (89–103) are the f-block rows drawn separately below the main table to keep it a readable width.
How the quiz works
Each round shows one chemical symbol and four possible element names. Pick the name you think matches; the quiz marks it right or wrong, reveals the correct answer, and keeps a running score, current streak, and best streak for the session.
