Arabic alphabet reference chart

The 28 base letters of the Arabic abjad in canonical order, from Alif (ا) to Ya (ي), with each letter's English name, glyph, and common Latin transliteration (e.g. Sin — س (s)). Arabic is written right to left and is unicameral, so there is one glyph per letter. The isolated (standalone) form is shown; the initial, medial, and final contextual forms, the harakat diacritics, and ligatures are excluded so each entry maps to one glyph.

Learn the Arabic alphabet (abjad)

Arabic is written in the abjad, a right-to-left script of 28 base letters from Alif (ا) to Ya (ي). This page pairs a full reference chart — name, glyph, and Latin romanization — with a self-scoring flashcard quiz so you can drill letter recognition. It is useful for anyone learning to read Arabic or Quranic script, whether for language study, travel, or worship. Letters are shown in their standard isolated form; the initial, medial, and final contextual forms and the harakat diacritics are left out so each card is a single glyph.

How the quiz works

Each round shows one Arabic glyph and four possible names. Pick the name you think matches; the quiz marks it right or wrong, reveals the correct answer with its romanization, and keeps a running score, current streak, and best streak for the session. Press Next letter for a new card or Reset score to start over. Every glyph and answer choice is selected with the Web Crypto API, entirely in your browser.
